Well doesnt seem that long ago writing the blog for January 2018 Koi Hand Pick Trip. After a remarkable year for koi sales we are entering this coming visit to israel with our lowest ever stock rate. Our trip cant come soon enough.
Our Expectations !
2018 has seen some stunning koi purchased by us across all farms in Israel. Our expectations are of course very high. This year we have added yet more water to our holding facility increasing by another 3500 gallons of water with plans to expand more. With the increased volume of holding water we hope to purchase more koi than ever before.
We have seen huge developments in the quality of juvenile koi arriving from Israel this year and intend to embark on a few growing on projects. This will enable us to maintain our high quality in every size through out the year. Demand for koi has been extreemley high in 2018 and as a result has seen us at time run short of certain sizes or varieties.
Given our very special relationship with the koi breeders in Israel. We have been in regular contact requesting koi week upon week throughout 2018 and the breeders have always found us what we have been asking for.
So what's New..
There are as always many new koi projects taking place across the farms. One avenue in particular seems to be the volume of high quality Butterfly Koi. This is excellent news as the demand couldn't be much highly here in the UK.
2019 trip will see us being able to hand select these koi from 5" upwards enabling is to offer the very highest quality in pretty much all sizes. With multiple farms experimenting in the production of Butterfly koi, each farm has something different and unique to offer found only amongst there waters.
What else will happen on the trip.
Well this years blog will offer the customer more of an insight into the day to day running of the farms and time prevailing we will attempt to take more pictures and videos of the farms themselves. Also speaking to the breeders we will be asking about upcoming koi production. All of this is to give you the customer the understanding of the effort and hard work which goes in to producing your prized procession
Many of our customers struggle to appreciate how difficult it may be to produce the perfect koi. Long hours and hard work plays a large part in production. It is not until the koi get to the sorting table that the breeders will know if they have succeeded. At the sorting area is where the magic happens and the breeders use there extended koi knowledge to select the koi they want to continue growing in the hope they make a show winning koi.

Stay tuned in to our blog as from the 25th of January we will be updating our day to day experiences.
2018 has seen a sharp rise in the demand for long finned koi species. Last year we have been able to offer various varieties in an assortment of sizes. For this coming season we have extended our water capacity in our facility to accommodate many more long Finned koi (Butterfly Koi)
These fish have been gradually increasing in quality throughout the last couple of years. After lengthy conversations with some of the breeders we are going to be able to select some Butterfly koi which you won't find anywhere else in the UK.
On our January hand pick trip we will be selecting some extremely rare and beautiful Long finned koi that may not have been seen before. With so much time and effort being placed into producing these magnificent koi; some new and unusual varieties are already being grown.
Here is one we stumbled across last year in January. Kin Ki Showa Sanke. In January 2018 we managed to purchase 6 of these species all as Butterfly koi. The breeder is expecting many more this time round as he has also kept a select few for breeding purposes.
What makes a Butterfly Koi so Special ?
The main and obvious attraction to butterfly koi is the elongated fins. Displaying much larger fin structure than a regular koi gives these koi huge presence in any koi collection. Looking graceful as these koi cruise about the pond is one of the many attractions .
The main attraction for the butterfly koi is the truly remarkably long tail fin.
This year there will be a dedicated section just for Butterfly koi on our website. This is due to the sheer popularity of this type of koi this year and also the already demand we have for some varieties. We will be able to offer these from Tosai age (less than 1 year old all the way up to 3 year old fish.
NEW NEW NEW !!!!
Fish are already being added to the New Category Butterfly koi on the webpage. Currently We have listed some young Tosai. Some stunning koi but limited numbers at the moment so don't miss these beauties!
Don't miss out! Head over to the new category Butterfly Koi and treat your self to something special. Now is a great time to get your self a growing project ready for the 2019 pond season.

After what has been a tremendously busy year on the koi. Things have now started to slow down a little. This is giving us the chance to explore new avenues. Something we have always touched on in recent trips to Israel is the extremely high quality of Oranda fancy goldfish being produced.
During our June trip this year we saw the huge expansion of the leading breeder in fancy goldfish. The expansion is almost 1 third of the existing operation. The new premise has been solely built to accommodate new or rare breeds of fancy Goldfish.
One of our newest arrivals which has just come out of Quarantine in our store is the Tricolour Oranda.
These fish will be suitable for a outside pond. However given the time of the year and the quarantine process these fish are currently being held at 18 degrees c. Given as they are in high temperatures they would have to be placed inside a heated quarantine tank until the weather improves outside.
Upon the first notification we got of the availability of these fish and the fact these fish are brand new it was a no brainer to purchase these fish now. With the unusual colours and markings this Oranda is always a very sought after goldfish.
Also available in or fancy goldfish are a few Ranchus . all these plus more will be added to the website in the upcoming weeks .
The final day of the June hand pick trip takes us to Madan Koi.
Here we already know most of the koi which are going to be available for us to select, however we have been informed they have added more to the tanks.
Before we start the buying the farm is keen to show us there indoor growing facility. This year this facility has proven it's worth to the farm so much so they are expanding the operation.
With each tank containing thousands of koi at various stages of the life. There is a constant breeding cycle going on. The breeder can monitor his fish very careful and also experiment with more tricky varieties
As you can see it is already a huge operation set to double in size next season.
After this educational visit we trot down to the main facility to start the buying
First up we start with some some very strong coloured Goshiki and Goromo.
Next bowl of koi is these stunning blood red Kohaku.
Followed up by these beautiful Sankes.
The quality just keeps coming
It's nice to see some many high quality koi the tancho kujaku really stands out.
We then decided to have a look at some of the jumbo koi. These fish were huge all at 5 years of age the colours and body shape were unbeliveable.
These koi are as big as Aviv makes them look each fish measuring well above 28"
Then we came to this kohaku and kujaku.
Then we moved along and found something very special. This massive showa sanke and stunning Hi Utsuri.
Day 2 we start the day at Hazorea Biosekoi. Here we are hoping for some high quality grow on koi. Today we are hoping foe big things .
The relationship we have with this farm is very strong. Prior to our visit we have been in contact with the breeder to request some koi we are looking to purchase.
At this farm there is a continuous cycle of breeding koi. In this area of the building the first stages of the rearing takes place. With every tank containing various fry.
At this point the breeders keeps all varieties separate so they can monitor and maintain a good selection of varieties. Here are some koi fry which are only 2 weeks old.
Kept in this building are the brood stock. This farm has a very large selection of brood to enable them to do multiple spawnings of each variety in a season.
Entering the fish house. Here the fish start there journey. The koi enter this section at a rough size of half a inch. From here they are constantly monitored and fed high protein foods to promote there growth.
Each tank holds thousands of koi. At multiple stages the koi are graded and separated. A large percentage of the fish are kept and grown to the next sizes
Everytime we visit this farm it is just amazing to see the volume of koi produced here. With all the koi being produced and reared under cover the farm can monitor the health and the development of there koi.
Here we start pur picking. And secure some superb grow on koi and these little beauties measuring 10".
From here we moved across to select some extreemly high quality koi. In these fish as you can see we have managed to secure some very unusual varieties such as karashigoi and Beni kikokuryu.
Continuing the buying we also purchased some larger koi. A couple of stunning doitsu Ochiba were quickly caught and will be coming home with us.
Also managing to secure some karashigoi regular scaled Ochiba Shigure and some Gin Rin Soragoi.
The kujaku were no decision they sell them selves with there striking Orange and amazing scalation pattern.
Something completely out.of the ordinary a Tancho Kigoi. This is the first time we have had one of these. The breeders were a little reluctant to sell due to the rarity of this fish.
How about this amazing Hariwake. Really unique scales stunning koi.
Finishing off with a Doitsu Tancho concluded our purchasing at Hazorea Biosekoi
Just before we left the farm are eager to show us there latest product
We ventured across to there small research facility to view these Bristol Shubunkins. These fish are rarely seen now a days and Hazorea are starting to produce these fish in large numbers.
This concludes what has been a fantastic trip to Hazorea next up Koi Kin fish farm.
Following the success we have had at Hazorea our trip to Koi Kin fish farm will be equally as good.
Having already secured some sizes of Long Fin koi this will be a nice easy visit.
After our visit to Koi Kin we moved onto something different to koi to our Goldfish supplier.
Here we select some high grade orandas suitable for Garden ponds.
Like with the koi again we are spoilt for choice and the fish are at a very high standard
After a long day we finished today's buying the way long days are meant to be finish. Tomorrow brings us to Madan Koi stay tuned.
What a glorious day to start the trip, the suns out and the temperature is matching the temperatures in the uk this week.
We start the day with a pre visit to Madan Koi. This pre visit is very essential giving us a first look at the koi the farm has prepared for us. At this stage it is possible for us to request any koi they may not have brought up. Usually though this is not the case and Madan Koi offer us more fish than we require.
The walk into Madan koi takes us past some of the holding ponds outside the packing house. Here the koi have come straight from the field and stored until they are sorted and graded according to size and quality.
Here is a see of yellow and white ogon ready for the packing house to be sorted
Inside the packing house it is unusually quiet. All shipments had already been packed and shipped early this morning. Also the next days shipments had also been sorted and put in the chilling tanks ready for dispatch tomorrow.
Here is a few fish getting ready to enter the chilling tanks ready to be shipped.
After a quick tour of the packing facility we step across to the next building to view the fish prepared.
Next stop Gan shmuel. This June trip shows us alot of changes at Gan shmuel. As the team come to greet us they are eager to show us the new uodates.
Here Gan shmuel are currently expanding there operation and building for the future. This is the new indoor facility which will be fully operational in the next few months.
After a short browse around as the breeders were very busy spawning the koi for next year we moved along to Dag Noy
Upon arrival it is lovely to see the scenary. Looking over the Jordan border its a lovely place to come and visit. The only downside is the heat today its 41 degrees C.
Dag noy adopt more traditional ways of farming and much of the machinery is very well worked and has been about for quite a few years. This clearly does not hamper the fish production as the koi quality is always a very high standard.
We get started and its clear the farm has put in alot of effort for our trip.
The koi here have been carefully selected specially for our visit and some of the koi are outstanding.
Many of the koi this farm offer you may well not find any where else in Israel.
Clearly this is going to be a busy day. Hand selecting is not easy.
Bowl after bowl of high quality fish there seems no end in sight. Here is a bowl of Utsuri. The colours and markings are superb
Trying to keep track on the varieties is very difficult with the amount of fish we have purchased
The quality just keeps coming. Its getting hard to keep going .
With no end in sight and the temperature getting warmer we crack on and get picking. Even the koi are feeling the heat witb tge oxgen paddles going full steam.
Finally we get to the end of the picking. This has certainly been a very good trip to Dag Noy with very high numbers of even higher quality koi. Thank you to all the farm members for all the work gone in to make this trip so good.
The excitement is building and our journey begins. We are sat waitong to board the airplane on what is expected to be one of the beat trips.
This year we have seen a dramatic rise in the quality of the grow on koi. We are hoping to continue the progress and biy some very special fish.
One of our to priorities this year is to try and find the rare and unusual koi varieties. With many koi enthusiasts looking for something different we will be on the hunt for some high quality rare koi.
Touch down! Our June 2018 Hand pick trip is official started.
Stay tuned for our update on madankoi pre visit tomorrow Hopefully spot some gems to bring home.
This seems to have come around fast. On Monday we head out to Israel to select yet more high quality koi. The trip cant come soon enough our stock of koi is a little depleted. We are now starting to miss a few varieties in various sizes.
This Trip as with all trips we will be looking for the highest quality koi to be found in Israel.
For the last few weeks the breeders have been working flat out to harvest there koi for our visit. Each breeder will strive to present us with there very highest quality koi to compete with the neighboring farms. Although each farm do ten to specialize in different varieties of koi it is still a big competition to claim the bragging rights to have the best fish.
Our Trip starts on Monday the 25th but due to bad flight times we will arrive late on at night so our first trip to see the fish will be Tuesday morning. Here we will visit Madankoi to view the koi we will select from later in the trip. This year there is also quite a few changes at MadanKoi with a additional new indoor koi system currently being built. This will be very interesting to see how the build is coming along and of course there will be pictures and videos showing you what is going ahead.
From here we will then continue our journey to Gan Shmuel fish farm where we saw a dramatic increase in the number of high quality koi this farm had, in particular the long finned koi. It is almost a certain That we will find some very nice koi here going off the January koi.
After the viewing we will the continue to visit the other various farms across the 3 days. This Trip should be very exciting We have noticed a sharp rise in customers looking for weird and wonderful varieties. These koi will be top of our agenda and we hope to be able to bring home some real specimens.
One of the Koi on our long list of wanted koi is the Midorigoi. This fish has become very hard to find in recent years and i understand that there may be a few to select from Hazorea koi farm. This farm has provided us with the high Quality grow on koi we have offered for the last few years. A truly mesmerizing farm with all the koi being produced under cover to help protect the vast numbers of koi the produce. it is fantastic to see the volumes of koi kept at this farm.
As the trip goes on there is sure to be lots of new and exciting things to share. So follow us day by day while we are there. This blog will be updated daily to give you a insight to what we get up to. Don't forget still looking for something unusual or something new to add to your pond . Get in contact with us and we will try our very best to find them while we are out there.
2017 saw a dramatic rise in sales of the Long Fin Koi species. Fish Farmers across Israel have recognised the importance in the demands for the Long Fin Koi. In the late 90's these fish were a rare sight often only seeing the odd couple of Long Fins in Purachina and Yamabuki Ogons.
An Insight into Breeding the Long Fin.
Many Breeders in Israel are currently undertaking the process to produce Long Fin Koi. Our trip in January enabled us to pin point the best supply of these fish. During our visit to Gan Shmuel Fish farm we asked a series of questions to enable us to better understand the breeding and selection of Long Fin Koi.
In the Last 4-5 years Gan Shmuel Fish farm started to create new lines of the long fin koi. Having asked the questions and getting the correct feedback from dealers they decided to undertake a few projects involving metallic Fish. In many opinions people often prefer the metallic colours, as these fish show their colour in their fins. The Breeding started with a few experiments to achevie the best quality koi. They originally started with the production using 1 male long FInned koi and breeding it with 1 female regular finned koi.
After many trials and the use of various varieties this method produced very low quantity but yielded high quality Long finned koi. With many of the koi reverting back to the regular short finned koi this was always going to be a little bit of a battle to increase their success rate. Using the small percentage of fish which this method had worked on and many spawings later, over the last few years Gan shmuel have managed to produce more and more high Quality Long Finned Koi.
Do these koi Grow slower ?
At first there were many unanswered questions surrounding these koi. However the more the farm started to work with them the more they started to understand. There is infact no difference in the growth pattern of a Long Finned koi. The only relevant difference is of course the fin size. Below is a example the the farm have sent to prove just that.
These photos have been taken 1 year apart and shows the development. The colours on this particular fish have not changed that much but the size has doubled and the fins are also noticably bigger.
Are these koi more susceptible to fin rot ?
Again this question is on most peoples minds when purchasing a Long Finned koi. In actual fact there is no health implecations or any difference between these koi and the regular short finned ones. If a Long Finned koi becomes sick it can be treated and healed in exactly the same way as a regular koi, The Koi are no less or more resiliant to disease.
Some new strains in Israel
It was a remarkable sight to see so many new strains of these koi produced. Many of the koi purchased by us are fish that are not only rare in long fins but also difficult to find in regular short fin . The quality is something else. This is a short video taken of one of the ponds of Long Finned koi we came across on our buying trip.
Time for some proper photos...
After having the koi for a few weeks we are now starting to lift some koi and get a few snap shots for the website . It has now become very apparent just how good these koi truly are. With their long flowing fins the fish look very graceful in the ponds and have a very distinctive look which makes them stand out . Below are a few of the fish we have had out to picture.
As you can see the fins are impeccable. The varieties produced are all very bright and stand out colours.
NEW VARIETY ALERT !!!!!
During our selection of some of these fish. Lior the breeder at Gan Shmuel Fish Farm gave us a great insight into the work they are putting in to the Long Fin Varieties. After our selection he showed us some very special koi.
This is a new variety not just because of the long fins koi but it is also a variety only produced usually through a stroke of luck in regular fin koi. The Kin Ki Showa Sanke. This koi displays Metallic Colours of Yellow, Black and White. The regular Showa Sanke displays a red or orange colour as opposed to the yellow on this koi.
This year you will see more and more varieties of the Long Fin Koi. With their popularity growing every year it is very exciting to be able to offer such high quality fish in the large quantities we have available . Why not treat your self and get the one stand out, unusual fish for your pond? Check out our listings to find your special fish.
Today is a big day . This morning at 4 am the koi we purchased on our January hand pick trip arrived. Arriving at the shop the first load of boxes were unloaded and the boxes were sorted into piles to indicate which tank the fish would go in.
With over 4000 fish to put away safely it was all hands on deck, even the snow didnt slow us down.
This is no slow job and the health of the fish is of the upmost importantance. We worked as quickly as we can to get the fish organised and acclimatised into the tanks. After floating the bags for the correct period of time we then begin to let the fish out of the bags and into their tanks.
With so many amazing fish its super exciting for everyone to see the quality we have purchased. The weather didn't seem to be on our side. It might look pretty but being in and out of water is not the most amusing thing anyone could do in these cold temperatures.
Fish will be pictured and sorted this week then the launch of our first batch of koi ready for our pre sales will become live on the website.
This weekend will see upto 100 or more of our new koi making there way onto the website which will be available for pre sale. Fish will be stored and reserved for the customer and will be ready for delivery on 10th March.
With some incredible fish being listed Don't Miss Out on our exclusive launch this Saturday 10th of Febuary. Looking for " that special fish " if we don't have what your looking for pleaseEmail or call us on 01253 932377 and we will send you pictures directly.
